7th July, 2008 - Tirupur weaves a bandh for itself

The Pattali Makkal Katchi had called a bandh on Monday with a charter of demands, including putting an end to dyeing units polluting the Noyyal river. PMK had sought support from all parties, traders associations, hosiery units, exporters association, schools, colleges, shops and others. However, the main parties like DMK, AIADMK, Congress and Communist parties did not relent.Outfits like Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Tamilazhaga Vivasayigal Sangam and Manitha Neeti Paasarai joined in the bandh.Normal life was not affected as all establishments, including schools and colleges functioned as usual. Strong police pickets were posted in and around Tirupur.
